Action Camera Water Protection: IP65 and Waterproof Housings

17 Sep 2026 0 Comments

Check the camera body and its waterproof housing separately before taking an action camera into water. The Bextgoo M11 camera is listed as IP65. Underwater use requires a compatible housing, and the M11 waterproof-case bundle lists a supplied housing rated to 30 metres / 100 feet under its stated conditions.

Choosing the right package starts with the activity: an ordinary outdoor ride, use near splashes, or deliberate immersion. A product photograph showing water does not replace the exact model's instructions.

What IP65 tells you

The two digits in an IP code describe different types of ingress protection. In IP65, the first digit refers to dust protection and the second to water-jet protection under the applicable test conditions. It is not an immersion rating. Axis's guide to IP classifications explains how dust, jets and immersion are classified separately.

For the M11, treat the published IP65 specification as a weather-resistance boundary for the camera body. Do not turn it into an unlimited rain, pressure-washing or underwater promise. The condition of covers, connectors and seals matters, and the operating instructions remain the guide for the exact unit.

Standard M11 or waterproof-case bundle?

Exact SKU M11_ActionCamera M11_ActionCamera_with_WPCASE
Camera body IP65 as listed; not for bare-camera immersion. IP65 as listed; the housing provides the stated underwater protection.
Waterproof housing This is not the separate waterproof-case bundle. Confirm a compatible housing before underwater use. A waterproof housing is included; the listing states 30m / 100ft with that housing.
Lens specification 140° as listed. 150° as listed.
Card 64GB included. 64GB included.

The two pages describe different SKUs. Read the specification and supplied accessories for the package you are ordering, rather than carrying a feature across from another M11 listing.

The waterproof-case SKU includes a housing. Its stated underwater limit applies with the compatible housing, not to the bare camera.

Plan for the conditions you expect

For an outdoor ride or walk

Check the forecast, the camera's operating instructions and whether the mounting position leaves ports or covers exposed. Set up the camera while stationary. Keep a dry storage option available if conditions become unsuitable.

For swimming or other deliberate immersion

Use a compatible housing with an appropriate stated depth limit and follow that housing's preparation and closure instructions. Check that the actual camera fits correctly and that the controls work with the case closed. The 30m / 100ft statement belongs to the listed M11 bundle housing, not to the bare camera or every third-party case.

For salt, sand or dirty water

Read the equipment's care instructions before the trip. Small particles around a seal can interfere with closure. Do not open a wet or contaminated case where water or grit can fall onto the camera. Let the instructions determine the appropriate cleaning and drying process.

A housing check before the camera goes in

  1. Confirm the exact fit. Match the case to the camera model and any accessory that remains attached.
  2. Inspect the closure. Look for visible damage, debris and anything that prevents the seal from sitting correctly.
  3. Follow the case's leak-check procedure. If the instructions require a test without the camera, complete it before installing the device.
  4. Check controls and mounting. Make sure the closed case can be secured using the intended attachment.
  5. Review the limits. Follow the published depth, temperature and care requirements; do not infer them from a marketing image.

A housing can also change how convenient it is to press buttons and capture sound. Check the experience in a suitable controlled setting before a trip where repeating a shot would be difficult.

What evidence is useful when choosing?

Start with the exact product specification, supplied-case description and instructions. Customer comments can help you understand handling or mounting preferences, but a single person's successful swim cannot establish a depth rating or guarantee another unit's seal.

This guide is based on published specifications and product illustrations. We are not presenting a new immersion test or an independent certification of the M11.

Frequently asked questions

Can the bare IP65 M11 go underwater?

No. The camera's IP65 description does not establish immersion protection. Use the compatible housing required for underwater use.

Does buying any M11 include the diving housing?

No. Check the exact SKU and package. The waterproof-case bundle specifically lists the housing.

Can I use a third-party case with a higher depth number?

Only after confirming its compatibility and instructions. A depth number on an incompatible case says nothing about the assembled setup.
