How Much Data Does a 4G Security Camera Use? A Practical Estimate

A 4G camera's monthly data use depends on what it sends over the mobile network, not simply on how many days it is switched on. Live viewing, remote playback and cloud uploads can produce very different totals. A memory card and a mobile data allowance also pay for different jobs.

This guide shows how to estimate a starting allowance and then measure your real usage. The calculations are illustrative; they are not measured consumption figures for a Bextgoo model or a quote for a data plan.

Which activities use mobile data?

Live viewing from your phone Video transmitted from the camera. Both the viewing duration and stream bitrate matter.
Playing a saved clip remotely The recording has to travel over the camera's mobile connection, even if it was originally saved to a card.
Cloud video upload Uploaded clips or streams, according to the selected service and recording settings.
Writing a recording to a local card The local write itself does not transmit that video over mobile data. An online camera can still use data for other services.
Alerts and background connection Additional usage that varies by device, service and notification contents.

Reolink's 4G usage guidance distinguishes these activities. Its model-specific monthly recommendations and bitrates are not Bextgoo specifications, so the examples below use clearly stated hypothetical rates.

Estimate the video portion with a simple formula

Video data in decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × viewing minutes × 60 ÷ 8 ÷ 1000.

The division by eight converts bits to bytes. For a 30-day month, multiply the daily viewing minutes by 30 first. This simplified calculation excludes network overhead, audio not included in the chosen bitrate, background services and additional uploads.

These examples show why viewing habits can matter so much. Opening live view several times a day for a long look is different from reviewing one short event. Variable bitrate, multiple viewers and the way the service distributes streams can change the result; do not assume a simple viewer multiplier without checking your service.

Keep cloud events in a separate line of the budget

Suppose an example setup uploads twenty 20-second event clips per day at an average 1 Mbps. That is 400 seconds per day, approximately 50 MB per day or 1.5 GB over 30 days, before other traffic. It is a hypothetical event budget, not the default behaviour of the R9 or M7.

If you also watch live video or replay those clips remotely, allow for that activity too. Conversely, do not assume that every minute recorded locally is uploaded. Inspect the selected storage service and use the plan provider's usage counter to learn what actually happens.

Check the regional model before choosing a plan

The Bextgoo R9 4G camera is listed with a 5200mAh battery and a 160° view. The Bextgoo M7 cellular camera also uses a mobile connection for remote access. Both listings identify the need for a compatible SIM, an active plan and suitable carrier coverage.

Before buying or renewing, confirm the country, exact camera version, supported carrier and whether the proposed SIM is accepted. A plan that works in a phone is not automatically suitable for every camera. A supplied SIM or trial also does not establish free permanent service.

For a plan described as unlimited, read its current conditions, including any fair-use policy, speed limits, renewal rules or restrictions. We do not publish fixed carrier prices here because the available service depends on region and can change.

Measure a normal week

  1. Record the starting data counter and the date. Note whether the provider counts decimal GB or another unit.
  2. Use your normal live-view and playback habits for several complete days. Note unusually busy periods.
  3. Record cloud settings, video-quality settings and significant downloads or updates.
  4. Read the ending counter. Account for any reporting delay and estimate a monthly allowance from a representative period.
  5. Leave room for variation, then check again after the first full billing period. A quiet test week may not resemble a busy holiday or work site.
